What to wear in Greece: Packing List & Clothing Tips

Unsure of what to pack or what to wear in Greece?

From the stunning mountains, to the expansive olive groves to the black sand beaches, Greece has something for everyone. With of all this diversity it can be difficult to decide on what to bring with you on your Greek vacation.

While your clothing may vary if packing for some adventures in mainland Greece vs. the Greek islands, with a versatile and well thought out packing list, you can be prepared for it all!

TIP: Don’t forget to check the weather. It seems obvious, I know. We travelled to Greece in early October and they were having an unusual cold front. We were so lucky we had brought a denim jacket in my case and a sweater for my husband. We used them daily, both at night and sometimes even during the day!

Don’t believe me – look at those layers, long pants, scarf AND a jean jacket!

What to wear in Greece: Athens

To take in all the beautiful sites throughout Athens, you’re likely to be walking around – a lot.

While there is a time and place for running shoes and a backpack, among the stylish locals you’ll stick out like a sore thumb. Avoid these unmistakable signs of the typical tourist outfit (unless that’s your style, if that’s the case, rock it!).

Personally, I prefer to blend in as much as possible, while also remaining stylish and comfortable. Plus as a bonus, you look cute for impromptu photos (or thought out well in advance ones too :)).

To keep up with the stylish locals, try to follow a more smart-casual approach, which means:

  • Avoid sweat pants or overly baggy clothing and opt for more tailored and well fitting pieces
  • If you’re more casual on the bottom (jeans) then opt for a more elevated top (nice t-shirt or blouse)

What to wear in Greece: Greek Islands

The Greek Islands are much more carefree! If you’re visiting the more popular Santorini, Mykonos or Crete, you can be well prepped with adding a few more casual pieces to your travel wardrobe.

This is THE place for your flowy summer dresses, crop tops, rompers, jumpsuits, you name it!

While a bathing suit, sunhat, and swim cover up are a given for either the beach or your in-room hot tub (yes and they even come with a jaw dropping views, read about our experience here).

There are a variety of activities to do on the islands, so be sure to pack accordingly! In Santorini alone, you can hike ~ 10km from Fira to Oia, lounge on a yacht in the caldera and volcano springs or walk down 300 steps to Amoudi Bay for the freshest sea food.

What not to forget when packing for Greece

Comfortable shoes: Remember when I said you’d be walking a lot? Trust me. Whether ballerina flats, sandals or sneakers are your thing, make sure to bring at least one pair of your trusty walking shoes.

Light jacket: While in the summer it’s unlikely you’ll need it, it doesn’t hurt to have if the nights are cooler. If you’re travelling in the winter, you’ll definitely need warmer layers.

One non-dress outfit: Whether shorts or trousers are your thing, don’t forget to bring at least one pair. I know it’s tempting to just bring summer dresses. But you’ll thank yourself if you decide to rent that ATV or buggy!

Cross body purse: Hands-free for taking photos and eating gyros (but not necessarily at the same time).

Camera: I’m just getting into photography and am loving my Nikon D3400, I carried this baby everywhere with me. Whatever your camera of choice, you will regret if you leave it at home!

Extra SD card: Everything in Greece is picturesque, you’ll be surprised at how quickly your SD card fills up. Plus, you can never have too many photos of bougainvilleas!
