Zika Free Honeymoon: Choosing A Worry Free Destination

Zika Free Honeymoon: Choosing A Worry Free Destination

Today a common concern for newlyweds coming from North America is that a lot of the traditional honeymoon destinations, particularly in the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America have become affected by the Zika virus. The mosquito born virus poses a serious risk for birth defects and is particularly dangerous for any couple that is pregnant, or who may become pregnant.

While a lot of destination have become off-limits for the time being, there are so many alternative destinations to take advantage of. As such I’ve enlisted the help of other travel bloggers to put together a swoon-worthy list of destinations that are Zika free to consider as you begin planning the best part of the wedding – the honeymoon!

While, I do make my best effort to ensure this list is accurate, situations do change so please make sure to check the CDC site for the latest updates and warnings on Zika.

From Safaris in South Africa, to beaches in Uruguay or underrated islands in South Korea, there’s a destination for every couple looking to plan their once in a lifetime celebratory trip!

Dubai has developed from an arid landscape to a pleasant travel destination that is filled with parks, promenades, beaches and a thriving art scene. And of course there is no shortage of shopping from the extravagant Dubai Mall, to the discount-laden Dubai Outlet Mall.

Extreme couples can explore the desert from quad biking, to hopping in a 4×4 and going on a desert safari. Skydiving or parasailing above the Palm is also extremely popular for intrepid couples.

For a more relaxing cultural experience you can spend a few hours at a hammam. If you can’t afford the nightly rates at the magical One&Only Royal Mirage, you can book a hammam treatment there and explore the premises.

When the sun goes down, you’ll want an extra dose of romance no doubt. Take a sunset cruise along the Dubai Canal or visit Kite Beach for beautiful views of the Palm and the Burj al Arab. The Burj Al Arab is the most iconic hotel (shaped like a sailboat) and is perfect for honeymooners. It is based in coastal Jumeirah which also has a wonderful promenade called The Walk along the expansive beach.

Egypt

While Egypt is likely on everyone’s vacation bucketlist, it may not be the first country to come to mind when you think of a honeymoon destination. Egypt is known for being chaotic, but there’s also so much romance to be had! Whether it’s taking a Nile Cruise and sailing along the most famous river to visit ancient ruins or diving in the Red Sea to see some of the most beautiful fish species, there’s an adventure to be had by every couple!

Egypt is a country where you can experience a variety of climates, from the desert to the mountains, to the city and to the seas. Start with a few days exploring bustling Cairo and visit the last remaining Ancient Wonder of the World, the Pyramids. Then spend a few days relaxing as you sail on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, stopping to see incredible temples and unique local areas, like the Nubian village. Then end your trip with relaxing by the sea in a luxurious resort at surprisingly affordable prices. Take your pick of the sea, whether Mediterranean or Red – or why not just do both! An adventurous and historic trip awaits you if you choose Egypt as your honeymoon spot!

Morocco is the perfect honeymoon destination. In Marrakech, spend romantic evenings sitting in a rooftop cafe overlooking the hustle and bustle of Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square that is crowded through the night with food and juice stalls, musicians, storytellers, games and more. Sample local Moroccan foods on an awesome food tour through the medina (old town). Buy beautiful handicrafts for your home and get wonderfully lost wandering the narrow labyrinth streets of the souks (markets) and when you are done, ask a shopkeeper for the “big square” for directions back to the main plaza.

Head over the Atlas Mountains and ride bicycles together in a palmeraie date palm oasis. Wander through the heavily scented fields of flowers in the rose water capital of the world. Explore the magical mud kasbahs, rising like fantasy castles from a bygone era from the desert floor.  Venture into the Sahara Desert and ride camels over orange dunes; be entertained by Berber drummers lit softly by golden lamps and moonshine; and spend a night glamping in a comfortable tent out of the Arabian nights. End your impossibly romantic honeymoon exploring the markets of the Fes Medina.

My husband and I spent our first wedding anniversary road tripping from Cape Town along the Garden Route. We’ve done this trip several times and absolutely love the area, it’s the perfect place for a honeymoon. The Garden Route officially starts in Mossel Bay, a nice town by the sea with wide sandy beaches, rugged coast line and great seafood restaurants, the perfect place for a first stop on the trip, there are several adventure activities here from hiking the St.Blaize Trail to cage diving with great white sharks and skydiving with landing right on the beach. For those who love pristine, unspoilt beaches Sedgfield is an amazing place to stop for a day or two, its long white sand beaches and cozy guest houses are made to make one’s holiday romantic. For adventure couples there are several outdoor activities here as well like surfing, kayaking, hiking or paragliding.

Along the Garden Route there are several private game reserves that can be visited as a day trip to spot some African animals or as a romantic getaway for a couple of days.

One of our favorite places on the Route is Stormsriver National Park with breathtaking scenery, many hiking trails, suspension bridges, canyons that can be explored by kayak or lilo and even a snorkeling trail.

What could be more romantic than sipping a G & T, watching hippos wallow in a water hole as the sun sets over vast plains.  This is exactly what you can expect from a safari honeymoon in Kruger National park in South Africa.

Days start early in Kruger as you leave camp early to search for the big five before the day heats up. Afternoons will be spent lazing by the pool or taking guided bush walks then another game drive as the sunsets and the animals wake for the evening.

Most Safari camps will include game drives, meals and transport and range from permanent tents to luxury resorts. Whichever you choose, your trained safari guides are sure to get you close up to elephants, hippos, lions, cheetahs and so much more. Kruger is zika free and a low risk malaria area but consult your doctor before you travel.

Whilst this might not be your typical “relaxing on a beach” honeymoon, it will be an adventure with your new spouse you’ll never forget.

The Bahamas is the perfect spot for a Zika-free honeymoon.  Leave the hustle and bustle of Nassau and head to one of Bahamas’ outer islands to see the true beauty of this amazing country. Great Exuma is known for its gorgeous blue water, amazing beaches and it’s swimming pigs! This is an amazing spot for a honeymoon as Exuma is definitely a place to relax and ‘get away’.

You won’t find any chain restaurants or stores on the island, and there aren’t any big name hotels with the exception of a Sandals resort. This laid back island boasts some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world. Grab lunch at the ‘Chat’n’chill’ or check out little Exuma for a day trip adventure on the island. You can get to Exuma via Bahamas Air in Nassau or several airlines fly directly to Georgetown airport in Exuma itself.

Located on the SW side of South America, Chile is a beautifully diverse destination for any honeymoon. The easiest place to enter the country from abroad is the capital of Santiago. Starting in Santiago will give you a lot of freedom to travel around the entire country. If you are looking for the snow be sure to head to the Andes. If you’d rather visit the beach Valparaiso and Viña del Mar are a short 1.5 hour bus ride away from Santiago.

Another popular and romantic Chilean destination is Atacama, one of the driest places in the world, and famous for stargazing, salt caves and pisco. Be sure to check out Elqui Valley of Coquimbo to learn how pisco is made and try it straight from the distilleries.

Last but not least is Patagonia and Chiloe. Patagonia of course is the famous mountain range that spans over Chile and Argentina. If you love the outdoors and hiking than this part of Chile is the place to be. Chiloe, on the other hand, is sometimes overlooked but can be just as beautiful and peaceful. The Chiloe islands are at the southern tip of Chile. They are famous for their delicious seafood, beautiful churches and peaceful landscapes.

Overall, Chile is a wonderful place to explore for a honeymoon. If you are coming from the US, however, remember that Chile is on the opposite side of the equator. This means that it is brutally cold May to October and scorchingly hot from November to April.

The colourful cobbled streets that wind through Colonia del Sacramento are your first step into the old world of Uruguay. With crumbling facades draped in cascading blooms of flowers and vines, framing the spindled chairs from which locals sip wines and indulge in steaks fresh from the country’s many farms. Reminiscent of villages in rural Spain, or hidden corners in Italian towns, Colonia is a romantic dream of the old world.

Moving further along the Uruguayan coast, you find Punta del Este, the getaway of South America’s rich and famous. With glitz and glamour, lavish resorts and glorious food, it makes for the perfect place to splash out on someone special. The beaches further east offer you a different atmosphere; hippy towns with empty beaches, spots like Punta del Diablo, Cabo Polonio or La Paloma offer unexpected seclusion, undisturbed in rustic seaside villages and spotless, stretching beaches. Uruguay remains undervalued on the international tourist scene, making it a dream location for those looking for culture and natural beauty away from the crowds.

California, USA is the perfect honeymoon destination for newlyweds who love the outdoors. The Golden State is home to beaches, lakes, deserts, mountains, and forests. Plus, it’s also full of wine tasting regions, top-notchcuisine, and lively cities.

If you’re looking to spend your honeymoon relaxing on the beach, head for Southern California. Catalina Island, Coronado, and Santa Barbara are all laid-back seaside areas with beautiful beaches perfect for relaxing after the stress of wedding planning.

For an active honeymoon, check out some of the state’s national parks. There are parks throughout the state, but the most famous are in Northern California. Namely Yosemite National Park, which is filled with hiking trails, campgrounds, and beautiful views.

Wine-loving couples will have no shortage of options in CA. Explore the Santa Ynez Valley, San Luis Obispo County, or the famed Napa Valley.

Or, best of all, take a romantic road trip through California to get a taste of all the state has to offer. Happy honeymooning!

If you’re planning a honeymoon, chances are, you are dreaming of a beach getaway.  You’re dreaming of spending your days relaxing by the pool, sunning on the sands, and perhaps taking in some amazing sights and sounds along the way.  However, you may be considering adding a new little person into your life soon after your honeymoon, so you want to make sure Zika isn’t a threat.

All of this makes Hawaii the ultimate honeymoon destination.  And let’s be honest, it’s already on your bucket list.  The tropical paradise will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed, all without the worry of Zika.  Hawaii has multiple resorts catering to every taste and budget, but all have one common goal: relaxing in paradise.

The islands in the Hawaiian chain have no shortage of epic landscapes.  With everything from volcanic cliffs to lush mountainsides and sandy beaches, the natural beauty of Hawaii is among the most gorgeous on earth.  When you’re not relaxing on the endless beaches, you’ll be “oohing and ahhhing” at the surrounding scenery.  Just make sure to enjoy some of the water sports and outdoor adventures while there.  From swimming with turtles to zip lining, Hawaii has it all.

With five main islands that can be visited, there is truly something for everyone. You can spend your days lounging in a five star spa on Maui, relaxing on the countless beaches, visiting Pearl Harbor on Oahu, or hiking through the rugged canyons to rushing waterfalls in Kauai.  Just make sure to spend the evenings taking in the multicoloured sunsets before  a romantic dinner with your new spouse!

European Honeymoon Destinations

Cyprus

Don't let Zika spoil what is supposed to be the most romantic trip to start your lives together! Here are 17+ Zika free destinations you should consider! #honeymoon

Cyprus is undoubtedly an interesting destination to spend your honeymoon. This country is the only one in Europe where you can visit a divided capital. Not many years ago, Cyprus was the scene of a civil war in which the country was divided in half between Turkey and the greeked influenced Cyprus itself. Visiting Nicosia (the capital) is really impressive, especially since you can cross the border between both sides of the country on foot, in the purest style of what it was like during the Berlin wall times. For safety, it is best to cross to the Turkish side only for the day and stay on the Cypriot side, don’t forget your passport!

But Cyprus is not just history, you can also enjoy the beaches in Ayia Napa, southeast of the island. These beaches have been winners of several awards for being the most beautiful and clean in Europe, so they are undoubtedly a must if you are traveling to this country.

One of the biggest advantages of this destination is that everything is very close and the prices are quite cheap compared to countries like Croatia and Greece. You can find good accommodations in Limassol and from there rent a car to move around the different attractions of the island, enjoying amazing views, chilling on the beaches and visiting historical places.

Greece

Don't let Zika spoil what is supposed to be the most romantic trip to start your lives together! Here are 17+ Zika free destinations you should consider! #honeymoon

Greece is a popular honeymoon spot and for good reason! There are so many beautiful islands to choose from (over 6,000 to be exact!) to relax and explore. There’s an island to suit every couple’s travel style. Whether you’re looking for romantic walks on the beach, exploring caves and ruins, riding scooters to small inland towns, the adventure you’re looking for, you’ll find here!

While relative to the rest of Europe, Greece isn’t expensive, the explosion of the popularity of some of its islands (namely Santorini and Mykonos) has driven up the prices (your Big Fat Greek Honeymoon doesn’t have to break the bank, here’s how we did it!).

Start your trip off in Athens easing your way in before heading out to experience island life. Take your pick of islands, depending on how long you’re staying for and how far you’re willing to travelling, 1 or 2 (max 3!) islands should suffice! We did a total of 9 days spread out in Athens and then Santorini and Paros, the latter island I’d highly recommend. Do your research on which are the best islands for a Greek honeymoon and choose which speak to you most!

Home to endless castles, rolling countryside, world-famous coastline, colorful small towns, delicious wine, impeccable cuisine, and–of course–the widely proclaimed most romantic city in the world, it’s hard to argue that there’s a better honeymoon destination on the planet than France.

Consider starting your honeymoon in Paris, where you and your beloved can watch the sunset over the Eiffel Tower, picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens, sip coffee at tiny outdoor cafes, admire some of the world’s greatest art at the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay, and cruise along the Seine.

From there, the possibilities are endless: for couples enchanted with wine, perhaps Bordeaux or Provence calls. For romantics, maybe the charming towns of Alsace. For history buffs and nature lovers, Normandy. For mountain lovers, Chamonix. For sun-seekers, the glitzy Cote d’Azur or even offbeat French highlights like the Calanques.

Whatever kind of French honeymoon is right for you, one thing is absolutely certain: it’s bound to be the most romantic trip of your lives so far.

Italy is a country full of romantic destinations but the Amalfi Coast tops them all for a perfect honeymoon. Visit for the stunning landscapes of the coastline and crystal blue seas. You can hire a private boat to take you to secret beaches and sparkling sea grottoes. Take a walk along the ‘Path of the Gods’ for scenery that needs to be seen to be believed. Or, just lay on the beach and relax. After all, isn’t that what honeymoons are for?

When you get hungry, find a table for two at a traditional trattoria and dine on delicious pasta, seafood and, of course, wine. And then take an evening stroll in search of lemon gelato made from the fruit of local trees that surround the coastal villages. The place to stay is Le Sireneuse in picturesque Positano. The hotel clings to a cliff and boasts some of the most incredible views you will ever see.

Australia makes a great honeymoon destination as there’s something for everyone to enjoy.  The best beaches are probably in Queensland, and of course, the Great Barrier Reef is a must.

The reefs here are spectacular, and if you’re looking for a unique way to see this vast ecosystem, you should consider spending a night on reef sleep.
The Whitsunday Islands and Fraser Island have some of the worlds most beautiful beaches and if you travel during August to October you’re likely to see the Humpback whales on their migration route.

Sydney is, of course, another destination worth putting on your itinerary.  The iconic Opera House and the harbour bridge are fabulous Australian landmarks.  I recently climbed the bridge, and although it’s expensive, I can highly recommend it.

If you like city life, I’d recommend a visit to Melbourne.  The city is famous for its laid back lifestyle and cafe culture.  The street art on Flinders Lane is a must, and if you have the time it’s worth taking a drive along the Great Ocean Road.

I should also mention Uluru.  This is probably Australias most famous landmark and although its a bit off the beaten track it’s an incredible sight.

Did you know? Australia is famous for it’s diving – why not try a liveaboard!

Australia’s Northern Territory is likely not top of your list if you’re planning your honeymoon. Fair enough, you’re likely thinking about never-ending, dusty roads, relentless temperatures, gigantic spiders, venomous snakes, and outback characters out of Crocodile Dundee.

Whilst all these things are still very much part of life in the Territory, choose the NT for your honeymoon and you’ll be surprised at how much beauty and romance is waiting to be explored.

Whether you’re looking for more high-end glamping options such as Wildmans Wilderness Lodge, Cicada Lodge or Kings Creek Station, or for something more basic, the NT has accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes.

Opt for an ultimate Aussie road trip in a 4WD from Darwin to Uluru and Kings Canyon and on the way, you’ll hike ancient, rugged landscapes, swim beneath waterfalls, learn about Aboriginal culture, indulge in fine dining and stargaze the outback sky. Visit the NT on your honeymoon and create memories that’ll last a lifetime.

There’s no better time to enjoy an overwater bungalow than a honeymoon. Bora Bora is the perfect honeymoon paradise for couples who are looking for a tropical and relaxing destination.

As someone who usually tries to do and see way too much on a trip, Bora Bora took that temptation away. The weather is perfect all day and night, the water is crystal clear, the fish are colorful, and the view never gets old.

The resorts are very secluded since most are on the outer motus (islands). That gives you a great view of the main island, and it means there are very few people on the pristine beaches.

During our honeymoon in Bora Bora, we spent our time snorkeling, scuba diving, riding around the island on a boat, feeding the fish from our overwater bungalow, watching the sunset from the beach, and eating at one of our favorite restaurants in the world – Bloody Mary’s.

It’s an easy flight from the US, especially if you live on the west coast. It’s also in the same time zone as Hawaii, so jet lag is less of an issue. While most of the resorts are very expensive, we found a great package deal through Costco Travel that made it more reasonable and convenient.

Sri Lanka might not be the first country that comes up for your honeymoon at the moment. However, Sri Lanka is still a very safe country that has an incredible amount to offer for its small size. Sri Lanka really has something for everyone.

Sri Lanka has picture perfect beaches with excellent resorts where the two of you get pampered like kings and queens. However, if you would like some more adventure on your honeymoon, Sri Lanka won’t disappoint either.

There are dense jungles where you can go on a wildlife safari and green rolling hills full of tea plantations. Culturally you will find ancient buddhist temples and interesting festivals.

With such a variety you will never get bored. The island is small so travel times are short. Furthermore, the delicious food and friendly people will make your honeymoon in Sri Lanka even more memorable.

South Korea’s most idyllic island is a popular honeymoon destination among young couples or newly wed Koreans. Jeju Island is located not far off the coast of Busan and is very easily accessible by boat from Busan or by plane from other major cities in Korea and even South East Asia. Jeju is well known for its stunning and romantic beaches, cozy accommodation and delicious food.

The island has a wide range of activities including hiking trails, theme parks, water sports, many museums, beautiful beaches and much more. Trying sea food and the Jeju black pork is a must when going to Jeju. The black pigs are natives to the island and taste quite different from the regular pork. It is a bit more expensive than regular meat due to the preparation method. First the pork is smoked above a burning stack of hay, this gives the meat juice a special flavor and makes the meat a chewier than regular pork.

It is recommended to stay at least 3 days on the island, but you can easily stay for months. As the island is huge it is best to rent a car and drive around Jeju. Using public transport is also possible, but will take up more time getting around. Book a hotel or guesthouse in Jeju city, this is only 10 minutes away from the airport and is well connected to other touristic sights in Jeju. Apart from Jeju Island, other great destinations to include in a South Korea honeymoon are Busan, Seoul, Gyeongju and the east coast.

A honeymoon in South Korea for many North Americans would be a unique destination to consider!
